Where Curiosity Leads: The Northeast Ohio STEM Hub

[[{“value”:”

Long before becoming director of the Northeast Ohio STEM Hub, Christine Danhoff discovered the power of curiosity while helping in her mother’s second-grade classroom. She remembers students immersed in science projects, asking questions, sharing ideas, making discoveries, and finding joy in the learning process. They were excited because they had an active role in what was happening around them.

When Christine became a teacher, she wanted her students to experience that same excitement. As technology became more accessible in classrooms, she looked for ways to help even her youngest learners investigate questions, create solutions, and share what they knew. She also brought classes together as learning buddies, creating opportunities for students to teach one another and take pride in their ideas.

Turning Curiosity into Opportunity

That belief helps shape the Northeast Ohio STEM Hub, hosted by North Point Educational Service Center (ESC) as part of the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN). Guided by North Point ESC’s mission of Championing Education, the Hub connects educators, schools, businesses, higher education institutions, and community organizations to expand meaningful STEM and STEAM opportunities for students across Northeast Ohio.

Through interdisciplinary, project- and problem-based learning experiences rooted in authentic challenges, the Hub helps students apply their learning, explore future career pathways, and discover connections between the classroom and the world around them.

At the heart of the Hub’s work is a simple belief: educators do not have to do this work alone. By creating opportunities for collaboration, professional learning, and shared problem-solving, the Hub helps strengthen STEM and STEAM education throughout Northeast Ohio.

A Place for Educators to Learn Together

Professional learning opportunities offered through the Hub are shaped by the needs identified by educators and school leaders across the region. Topics may include project- and problem-based learning, computer science, artificial intelligence literacy, STEM and STEAM implementation, career-connected learning, and emerging educational practices.

Educator networks, coaching conversations, School Spotlight visits, and collaborative events provide space for participants to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another. These experiences often lead to new partnerships, new classroom practices, and new opportunities for students.

The Hub welcomes educators at all stages of their STEM and STEAM journey, whether they are exploring new instructional strategies, strengthening existing programs, or pursuing STEM or STEAM designation.

Seeing Possibilities in Action

Strong STEM and STEAM education gives students opportunities to bring together knowledge from multiple disciplines, collaborate with others, and apply what they learn to real questions and challenges. It also helps students discover interests, strengths, and career possibilities they may not have otherwise considered.

The Hub helps schools bring these opportunities to life through School Spotlight visits, regional networks, and professional learning events. Spotlight visits allow educators and leaders to observe STEM learning in action, speak with students and staff, and consider ideas they might adapt within their own schools.

Regional events and networks create opportunities for meaningful conversations that often extend far beyond a single meeting. A discussion may inspire a new lesson, a collaboration between schools, or a connection to a workforce or community partner that enriches student learning.

As part of OSLN, the Hub also serves as a bridge between local schools and a statewide network of educators, partners, and resources, helping share innovative practices while showcasing the strengths emerging from Northeast Ohio.

Connecting the Strengths of a Region

Northeast Ohio is home to educators, Business Advisory Councils, businesses, colleges, universities, and community organizations that are deeply invested in young people. The Hub sees an opportunity to bring these groups into closer conversation, build on the work already underway, and create stronger connections between classroom learning and life beyond school.

Looking ahead, the Hub hopes to reach more STEM-curious and STEM-aspiring schools while deepening relationships with workforce and higher education partners. Success will be reflected in educators who have people to learn with, schools that continue developing meaningful STEM practices, and students who see new possibilities for themselves through the questions they ask and the challenges they choose to explore.

Three words describe the Hub’s vision: Curiosity. Connection. Opportunity.

An Invitation to Begin

What gives the Northeast Ohio STEM Hub hope is the educators who show up for students every day and think deeply about the experiences that may shape who those students become. Like their students, educators continue to grow through curiosity, new experiences, and meaningful connections with others. A school does not need a finished plan to get started. An email, a question, or an idea is enough. Schools can meet with the Hub virtually or in person, participate in professional learning opportunities, visit a Spotlight school, or connect with potential partners.

If educators remember one thing about the Northeast Ohio STEM Hub, Christine hopes it is this:

“Bring us your questions and ideas. We’ll help connect you with the people, resources, and opportunities that can turn them into meaningful learning experiences for students.”
