Upcycling Workshop and STEAM Integration

Introduction Sustainability and the green economy are at the core of contemporary education as much as they are vital for our future. Within the scope of our eTwinning project, we organized an inspiring workshop with our 9th-grade vocational high school students, where we questioned our consumption habits and merged science with art: “The Story of a T-Shirt and Upcycling.”

Our goal was to comprehend the massive production process behind a seemingly ordinary t-shirt and to breathe new life into waste textile products.

The Intersection of the “Turkey Century Education Model” (TYMM) and Physics The Turkey Century Education Model (TYMM) emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, sustainability, and process-based evaluation in education. We directly integrated this workshop with the “Energy” unit and sustainability outcomes of the 9th-grade Physics curriculum. The immense amount of water consumed and the heavy energy footprint generated from the cotton field to a t-shirt in our closets provided an excellent real-world application for our physics course regarding the efficient use of resources.

Our students made critical deductions about resource sustainability by considering economic and environmental factors. Furthermore, by analyzing the physical properties of fabrics (such as durability, elasticity, and thermal insulation), they scientifically debated which new forms would be most suitable for the waste materials.

From Textile Waste to Educational Value: A STEAM-Based Upcycling Workshop

The Workshop Process: From Waste to New Value During the workshop, students examined old, unusable t-shirts and textile scraps brought from home. Instead of discarding these items, they dismantled, cut, and redesigned them into brand-new goods and instructional classroom materials.

Transforming ordinary textile waste into bags, rugs, pencil cases, or educational game materials served as both a STEAM engineering/design challenge and a significant environmental awareness achievement for our students. By combining manual skills with scientific purpose, they experienced firsthand how “production” and “environmental preservation” can successfully coexist.

Conclusion and Impact To build the world of tomorrow, our youth must shift from a “use-and-discard” culture to a “repair-and-transform” culture. Thanks to our upcycling workshop, our students did not just learn the long and arduous journey of a t-shirt; they actively rewrote its ending. Transforming STEM education into a social benefit—one of the core missions of both the Scientix and eTwinning communities—begins with these small yet meaningful steps in our classrooms.
