Southeast Ohio STEM Hub: Building Pathways, Partnerships, and Possibilities

[[{“value”:”

Across the rolling hills and vibrant communities of Appalachian Ohio, a growing network of educators, schools, businesses, community organizations, and higher education partners is working together to create meaningful opportunities for students through STEM and STEAM education. At the center of this work is the Southeast Ohio STEM Hub, housed at Ohio University, where collaboration, innovation, and community-driven learning are helping shape the future of the region.

Rooted in Community, Focused on the Future

Ohio University’s mission emphasizes preparing learners to think critically, care deeply, lead boldly, and serve their communities. As the Southeast Ohio Regional Hub for the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN), the University extends that mission beyond campus walls by connecting students and educators with authentic STEM experiences, career pathways, and meaningful partnerships across Southeast Ohio.

The Hub serves as a connector, bringing together K-12 schools, higher education, industry partners, government agencies, and community organizations to expand learning opportunities and strengthen STEM and STEAM learning. Through these partnerships, students gain exposure to real-world STEM applications while educators access resources, professional learning, and collaborative networks that enhance classroom experiences and student outcomes.

At the heart of the Southeast Ohio STEM Hub is a leadership team committed to building relationships and creating opportunities for students and educators. Hub Directors Jen Bowman, Jenny Hileman, and Stephanie Miller work closely with schools, community organizations, higher education institutions, and industry partners to connect people, ideas, and resources that strengthen STEM and STEAM learning throughout the region.

Through their collaborative leadership, the Hub supports professional learning, fosters regional partnerships, guides schools through STEM and STEAM designation efforts, and helps create experiences that connect students to future opportunities. Their work reflects the Hub’s commitment to listening to local communities, celebrating regional strengths, and ensuring that schools have the support needed to help students thrive.

A Vision of Possibility

What gives the Southeast Ohio Hub hope is the growing momentum behind STEM and STEAM education across the region.

Schools, businesses, community organizations, and higher education partners are working together to create experiences that help students see themselves as future scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and community leaders. Rural teacher fellowships, regional convenings, science fairs and science days, citizen science initiatives, and place-based learning experiences are helping students connect classroom learning to the opportunities and challenges that exist within their own communities.

As more schools embrace high-quality, career-connected learning experiences, Southeast Ohio is building a strong foundation for the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and civic leaders who will help shape the future of Appalachia’s economy and quality of life.

Supporting Schools Every Step of the Way

Since 2021, the Southeast Ohio STEM Hub has worked to strengthen STEM and STEAM education across its 23-county service region. The Hub’s approach centers on supporting and elevating the outstanding work already happening in local schools while introducing new opportunities that align to Ohio’s Quality Model for STEM and STEAM Education.

Schools that engage with the Hub gain access to:

  • Professional learning opportunities, trainings, and workshops
  • Regional conferences, convenings, and networking events
  • Coaching and guidance for schools pursuing STEM or STEAM designation
  • STEM Conversation Hours and educator collaboration opportunities
  • Connections to regional workforce, industry, and community partners
  • Engagement opportunities for pre-service teacher candidates
  • Community outreach events and family-focused STEM programming
  • A lending library of STEM activities, equipment, and resources

Whether a school is beginning its STEM journey or looking to deepen existing practices, the Hub provides support, resources, and connections needed to grow and sustain high-quality STEM learning.

Creating a Continuum of Learning and Opportunity

One of the Hub’s greatest strengths is its ability to connect experiences across the educational continuum, from elementary school through postsecondary education and careers.

Current initiatives create pathways that connect K-12 learning with higher education and workforce opportunities through educator professional learning, STEM Ambassador networks, designation support, teacher candidate engagement, and regional partnerships. These efforts help students:

  • Build STEM literacy and problem-solving skills
  • Explore career pathways and workforce opportunities
  • Engage in place-based learning connected to local industries and communities
  • Develop meaningful connections between school, college, and career

By creating these connections, the Hub helps students envision futures that are both ambitious and attainable while strengthening the talent pipeline needed to support the region’s continued growth.
