A Taste of Hope in Granada

A weekend of laughter with Emily

Greetings from Granada! I cannot believe that as I write this, I’m over a month into my semester abroad… Sometimes the days have felt long, but as I sit here writing this, I’m reminded that time is moving so quickly, and I’m already five weeks into my program.
This past weekend, I was blessed to welcome my friend Emily for a visit to Granada. Emily and I met through our involvement in the worship team at Hope, and I cherish the many laughs and memories we’ve shared within the walls of Dimnent Chapel. And yet, this semester, we’re both studying in places far away from Hope College and the rose window. Emily spends most of her days learning and honing her French in Nantes, France, while I spend my days here in Granada, Spain, speaking lots of Spanish.
As I continue to settle into a rhythm of being far away from my family and friends at home, I continually find myself grateful for the gift of voice memos and FaceTime. But there’s no denying there’s something extra sweet about getting a hug from a dear friend from home. Life abroad is different than life at Hope College, and Emily and I spent time talking about all the things we’re feeling being away from the Hope community. It was so good to articulate the many things that come with living in a completely new place!
We spent our weekend wandering the streets of Granada, eating tapas at new places, and walking up lots of hills, all while soaking up some lovely sunshine! Not only was it so fun to continue to explore a new city with my friend from Hope, but it was also so sweet to reflect on all the cool experiences we’ve had (and yummy food we’ve tried)!
I loved this weekend because I spent it laughing and exploring with Em! What a sweet treat to have a little reminder of Hope College here in Spain. And how cool to think about the learning and growth we’re experiencing in new places!
Here’s to quite literally having friends all over the globe! And the joy of making sweet memories wherever we find ourselves!
