From Mastery Learning to Digital Personalisation

The mastery learning model, theorised by Benjamin Bloom in the 1960s, postulates that every student can achieve high levels of learning if they are provided with the necessary time, methods and support. However, the practical implementation of this pedagogical model has always faced significant challenges in traditional schools, mainly due to the difficulty of managing large classes of students with diverse cognitive abilities.

Book in Progress AI emerges as an evolution of a well-established educational project, promising to transform the pedagogical vision of mastery learning into a scalable reality through artificial intelligence. The project can be accessed via the official website, which coordinates the entire national network of participating schools.

The project was initiated by Prof. Salvatore Giuliano, the principal of the “E. Majorana” institute in Brindisi, Italy. Work is being coordinated by Prof. Cosimo Luigi Manes, with the support of Profs. Rossella Palmizio and Sabrina Tiralongo.

The Book in Progress Project: Foundations for AI Innovation

Book in Progress constitutes a national network of schools that produce educational materials to replace traditional textbooks. These materials are developed by teachers in the network for primary and secondary schools. The lead school, IISS “E. Majorana” in Brindisi, coordinates a project that has already been shown to improve student learning while providing an affordable alternative to expensive textbooks.

Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Personalised Learning

Book in Progress AI transforms traditional educational materials into dynamic, personalised learning experiences. Its main functionalities operate in synergy to achieve authentic personalisation of the educational process. The system is multilingual, ensuring accessibility for students of different nationalities and linguistic backgrounds.

Content Adaptation to Learning Styles

The ‘Genius’ mode is the main innovation, as it allows content to adapt dynamically to individual learning styles. Artificial intelligence continuously analyses students’ interactions with educational materials, identifying behavioural patterns that reveal specific cognitive preferences. For example, students with a visual learning approach can benefit from content enriched with diagrams, concept maps, graphs and images generated by the system.

Continuous Formative Assessment

The system implements a formative assessment mechanism that transforms the assessment process from one of selection to one of continuous growth. Artificial intelligence constantly monitors progress through micro-assessments integrated into the learning path, focusing on basic knowledge, in-depth understanding and reasoning skills. This three-dimensional approach enables the precise identification of each student’s strengths and weaknesses, creating detailed cognitive profiles that extend beyond simple performance measurement.

Authoring and Analytics System

Book in Progress AI integrates an advanced authoring system that enables teachers to create and customise educational content directly on the platform. This tool supports the creation of multilingual content and facilitates the translation and adaptation of materials for students of different nationalities. The platform provides advanced analytics tools that allow schools and teachers to monitor the effectiveness of learning through intuitive dashboards and detailed reports while strictly respecting student privacy.

Technical Architecture

The Book in Progress AI platform is based on a distributed architecture that uses interchangeable, upgradeable, open-source Large Language Models (LLMs). Student privacy is guaranteed through advanced encryption techniques and differential privacy, with each school managing its own on-premises data. The platform implements a hybrid architecture, combining cloud middleware for content distribution with on-premises systems for processing student data. Python is used for the server components and React/Tailwind CSS for the front end.

Benefits for Students

Implementing Book in Progress AI generates measurable benefits that transform the educational experience. Students can access content in personalised ways, from standard visualisation to Genius mode, which adapts content to their specific cognitive style. Multilingual support promotes inclusivity in personalised learning by ensuring accessibility for students of different nationalities. Continuous formative assessment eliminates the performance anxiety typical of traditional assessments, creating a calm learning environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth.

Implementation and Future Perspectives

Book in Progress AI represents the natural evolution of an educational project that has already been proven to be effective on a national scale. Planned for the 2025/26 school year, the integration of artificial intelligence will transform existing educational materials into a personalised, adaptive learning ecosystem. IISS “E. Majorana” in Brindisi, the lead school, will continue to coordinate development, and teachers will be able to access the project through its website. Making the system open source in 2026 will ensure that educational institutions at every level have access to the technology, democratising access to personalised learning.

Conclusions

Book in Progress AI represents the evolution of an educational project that has already proven effective in enhancing learning outcomes and providing tangible solutions to families’ financial challenges. The integration of artificial intelligence with the established expertise of the IISS “E. Majorana” network in Brindisi brings pedagogical research to life through the potential of AI. Authentic personalisation of learning becomes a real possibility for all students, creating an educational ecosystem that promises to transform the effectiveness and equity of education and finally realise the Bloomian principle of quality learning being accessible to all.
