Umbria, Italy School Trip

[[{“value”:”

Ciao, amici, tutto bene? Sike, I know you guys won’t be able to answer that!

Recently, I visited Umbria with my IES Abroad program. I was skeptical about going on this trip, but I am very grateful that I went because I made a new friend, David.

While we were traveling to Umbria, I recognized David from his Instagram post at a Milan church that I had been wanting to visit, and I initiated a conversation with him. We reflected on the challenges of living out our faith in our current environment. It made us both so grateful that we crossed paths; it’s been a blessing to have each other for accountability, encouragement, and fellowship.

Later during the trip, we had the best time on our bus ride toward the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Here are some pictures!!!

The Blessed Grass

As we were riding in the bus, everyone was talking about how much nicer Umbria is than Milan. I noticed the clouds were casting huge shadows over the fields, except for one patch of grass that was illuminated by the sun.

I started pointing, joking, “Yo, the grass truly is greener on this side,” and “Bro, God’s favor is on that grass.” It probably doesn’t sound as hilarious now, but we were dying in the back of the bus.

The Chocolate Champion

Next, we arrived at the Baci’s chocolate factory, and learned how to make chocolate from their chef. I did so well making chocolate that I won an award!

Two men standing together indoors, both wearing white aprons and chef hats. The man on the left also wears a beanie with "ITALIA" written on it, while the man on the right wears a tall traditional chef hat. The man on the right is holding up a certificate and smiling, and both are posing for the camera in what appears to be a cooking or chocolate-making class, as suggested by the Perugina logo and kitchen setting. There is a sign in the background with Italian text and kitchen stations with bags and papers. The atmosphere is casual and friendly.

Sike. The whole class got a certificate for participating…

Group of people in a chocolate workshop: This image shows a group of around 25 people in what looks like a chocolate-making workshop or class. Most individuals are wearing white aprons with a logo on the chest, and they're standing behind a large preparation counter. There is a man dressed in all white in the center, who may be the instructor or chocolatier. In front of the counters, four women and one man are kneeling or sitting on the floor, smiling at the camera. The room is well-lit with bright ceiling lights, and there are brown cabinets and bags on each side, likely filled with chocolate products. On the back wall above the group, there is an Italian phrase: "A PERUGIA IL CIOCCOLATO È SEMPRE DI SCENA!", which translates to "In Perugia, chocolate is always on stage!" There are photos of chefs in the background as well, suggesting a focus on culinary arts.

But I promise you, I was one of the first ones called, and I thought I won because I made the best chocolate.

Roome With a View

During our stay, I probably had the best view I’ve ever seen in my life. We were in a 5-star hotel perched on a mountain, and I’m convinced that my view was the best of the whole group. Here is a picture!

Golden curtains partially parted, revealing a sunlit window view of a scenic landscape. Outside, there are buildings nestled among greenery and hills with a soft blue sky above, scattered with clouds. The sunlight casts a warm glow through the opening in the curtains, illuminating the scene and creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere inside. The edges of the curtains have a textured trim, and the lower part of the window frame is visible.

We ended this trip with some lasagna and a long commute back home. This trip was so much better than I ever anticipated.

A young man standing outdoors in front of a stone wall, with a broad, sunlit landscape in the background. He has short, dark, somewhat curly hair and a trimmed mustache and beard. He is wearing a black leather jacket over a tan shirt and dark pants. The sky is bright and clear, with a faint outline of distant mountains and green fields below. The sunlight is behind him, casting his front partially in shadow.

Here’s a picture of me on the side of the Basilica!

Ciao ciao, ragazzi, thanks for reading this all the way to the end!
